Simonsdale Elementary School, Portsmouth, VA
Served as the Structural Engineer of Record and Special Inspector for a new $15.4 million, one- and two-story LEED Gold certified elementary school building for Portsmouth Public Schools. Designed to accommodate 700 students, its square footage is 81,165. Work also included a single story 1,267 square foot administration building and a 1,036 square foot concession building.
The school is supported on reinforced concrete spread footings. Building systems include steel columns, beams, and open-web bar joists support floors and roofs, concrete slab on grade and elevated concrete slab on metal deck, insulation, single-ply membrane roof, and vegetative "green" roof over classroom wings and standing seam metal roof make up roofing. HVAC is provided by geothermal-based heat pump systems.
