Page Middle School
Devastated by tornado damage, the former Page Middle School was replaced by a brand-new, safe school that stands proudly to serve students in Gloucester County, Virginia.
Served as Structural Engineer of Record and Agent 1 Special Inspector for a new two-story 118,237 square-foot middle school to accommodate 800 students. Our team facilitated a process to determine the best approach for the replacement of the school damaged by a tornado in April 2011. We also designed and provided Additive Alternate plans and details to harden a portion of Page Middle School. The level of hardening increased the design wind speed from the Code minimum of 100 mph to 134 mph (equal to the top end of a Category II hurricane). The Gymnasium, Kitchen, adjacent restrooms, and adjacent connecting corridors areas are designed to meet this elevated requirement. This prototype school was later adapted for Suffolk’s Colonel Fred Cherry Middle School.
