Owned by the City of Virginia Beach, The Adam Thoroughgood House is one of the oldest surviving homes in Virginia from the early Colonial period circa 1719. Since 2006 Speight Marshal Francis has performed various studies and historical renovations to the original Adam Thoroughgood House and museum. Studies included structural investigations to determine if any visually accessible areas of the structure were overloaded or unsafe. Work involved mapping the floor plan and framing plans as well as structural analysis. Our findings were presented in a report with drawings. We performed subsequent structural design of repairs to the house, original visitor’s center and outdoor pavilion. Additional design services included designing repairs for masonry cracks, HVAC improvements, and repairs for stairs and floors.
Speight Marshall Francis also served as Structural Engineer of Record and Agent 1 Special Inspector for a new Visitor Center building which houses space to educate visitors about the history and significance of Adam Thoroughgood House, a c. 1719 colonial home and museum. Completed in 2018, the single-story wood-framed Visitor Center consists of accessible restrooms, a gift shop, a video-viewing area that displays a video tour of the interior of the historic house, classroom/exhibition space, offices, and collection storage. Green building design practices and hurricane-force protection were integrated, however best museum practices and considerations for protection of the collection objects on display and in storage took precedence. Projects issued under term contracts with the City of Virginia Beach.
