Special Features: Historic Renovation
Constructed in 1901 by local merchant R.L. Stowe, Chronicle Mill holds a significant place in the history of Belmont, NC. As the town's first textile mill, it witnessed the rise and eventual decline of the industry, ceasing production in 2010. However, the story does not end there. Thanks to a collaborative effort, the mill has been given a new lease on life as a multifamily building, overcoming numerous challenges to the project.

Originally spanning 67,540 sf, the mill underwent a meticulous renovation to transform it into 102 modern apartment units. In recognition of the mill's heritage, remnants of the original facade were preserved, serving as a poignant reminder of its historic significance. The new facade preserves the historical details of the original while introducing contemporary elements, striking a harmonious balance between past and present. On the opposite side of the mill's former footprint, a metamorphosis took place. The once-vacant area now thrives as a pool amenity deck, seamlessly integrated with grilling areas among remnants of the mill's facade. This thoughtful design pays homage to the mill's past while creating a vibrant space for community gatherings and leisure activities.

To ensure architectural coherence, the design of the newly constructed portion of the project complements the simplicity of the existing building. This additional 138,000 sf wood-framed structure spans 4 and 5 stories, and blends Type III and Type V construction methods to create a cohesive and efficient living space. Within its well-designed framework, it accommodates 138 thoughtfully crafted residential units, offering comfort, style, and modern amenities to all its occupants. Rather than competing for attention, the new building elegantly harmonizes with the mill. The west facade stair, serving as a connecting bridge, stretches over an amenity courtyard space, seamlessly uniting the old and the new.

Behind the scenes, the structure of the mill reveals a rich tapestry of construction methods from different eras. A blend of concrete on a steel deck with a steel frame dating back to the 1970s, steel columns with wood decking from the 1930s, and heavy timber columns and beams with pine decking from its original construction form an intricate framework that supports the building. This unique combination showcases the mill's evolution over time and highlights its robust foundations. Reclaiming Chronicle Mill as a social hub for Belmont extends beyond the revitalized residential units. The project has also given birth to newly developed retail and food and beverage spaces, complemented by large outdoor gathering areas.

Speight Marshall Francis, in partnership with a dedicated team, is proud to have breathed new life into this historic site while preserving its rich heritage. The revitalization of Chronicle Mill serves as an inspiration for adaptive reuse projects, championing community-driven solutions that transform neglected spaces into cherished landmarks.
