Greer Elementary Classroom Addition & Renovations
Throughout the years Speight Marshall Francis has provided structural engineering services for several work orders to provide improvements and repairs to Greer Elementary School which was originally constructed in 1973. Greer Elementary is part of the Albemarle County Public Schools' system.
Our first work order included a single-story 11,500 square foot gymnasium addition, new administrative offices, and new front entry. The renovations included adding interior doors to all classrooms; dividing some existing classrooms into resource classrooms and an office or storage room; expanding the media center by capturing some adjacent corridor space and other support spaces; equipment changes or renovations to the existing kitchen; minor renovations to the existing multi-purpose room and renovating several classrooms into administrative and/or guidance space.
Our second work order included a one-story classroom wing addition and interior renovations. The addition included six new classrooms, an art room with kiln, a fully developed courtyard, a one-story connector to the existing school, and additional parking.
Most recently our firm completed inspections of the existing building to identify structural issues and their criticality. We designed repairs as needed and provided design for upgrades including an interior classroom addition and repairs.. This work involved the removal of the existing stage from the multi-purpose room and converted the existing space into four classroom spaces. Added a roof-mounted HVAC unit, new window openings, and supplemental steel to brace new walls.
