G.W.C. Brown Memorial Hall at Norfolk State University
A $55M flagship campus building completed in 2017, G.W.C. Brown Memorial Hall’s energy and resource-efficient design achieved LEED® Gold certification.
Speight Marshall Francis served as Structural Engineer of Record and Agent 1 Special Inspector for this new 151,899 square foot, 3-story steel-framed educational building on the campus of Norfolk State University. Brown Hall features a 45' cantilevered floor system and houses 20 flexible classrooms including Math & Mass Communications, 4 distance learning classrooms, 6 computer labs, 4 observation classrooms, 7 meeting rooms, administrative offices,4 study areas, 2 student and faculty lounges, 8 audio, and video editing suites, a TV studio, a multipurpose black box theater, and a 600-seat theater. A Commonwealth of Virginia project, design documents went through the rigorous BCOM review and approval process (currently known as the DEB-Division of Engineering & Buildings).
