Westhampton School Redevelopment
A harmonious blend of the old and new, the Westhampton School Redevelopment in Richmond, VA reimagines this four-acre site into a modern mixed-use campus.
Playing a pivotal role in this inspiring project, Speight Marshall Francis contributed as the Structural Engineer of Record and Agent 1 Special Inspector. The focal point of this redevelopment is the meticulous rejuvenation of the original Westhampton School, an edifice rooted in 1917. Undergoing a comprehensive overhaul, the school was stripped to its core, emerging as a beacon of modernity with a core and shell design tailored for contemporary office spaces. A standalone elevator was ingeniously incorporated, bridging the temporal gap with functional elegance.
The second building, a magnificent four-story structure, harmoniously marries a single-level steel or cast-in-place concrete podium with three levels of wood-framed apartments. These 66 units redefine luxury living in the burgeoning Patterson/Libbie Avenue area, with the podium level offering a haven of tenant amenities, crowned by a generously sized pool.
The third remarkable building in this architectural ensemble takes the form of a five-story, wood-framed, 63-unit apartment building, elegantly embracing two sides of a precast parking structure. This modern marvel effortlessly converges office, commercial, and living spaces, fostering a dynamic community where work, commerce, and residence coalesce seamlessly.
In this symphony of old and new, the Westhampton School Redevelopment emerges not just as a physical transformation but as a living narrative of innovation. Each building tells a story of adaptation, preservation, and evolution, weaving together the threads of history and modernity into a flourishing urban tapestry.
